Ivo Gönner, Ex Lord-Mayor of the City of Ulm – PEOPLE AND CULTURES ALONG THE DANUBE – A HOPE FOR EUROPE
The Danube is the only European river flowing from the West to the East. The Danube is also a symbol for the difficult rapprochement of the parts of Europe, which were so long separated. Europe is large and multifaceted, the historical roots often divide rather than bring together. However, the future can only be shaped jointly. Nationalism and separate ways lead always to conflicts and to acts of violence. Variety and mutual respect form good and stable foundations on which also future generations can continue living and building upon.
